LARP concept:
It's June 19, 1882. The town of Providence, California (population 500, give
or take a horse), about 75 miles northwest of Needles, has just suffered a
great loss: the passing of its founder, John Merriwether, who died of natural
causes two weeks ago.
Originally from Providence, Rhode Island, he left for the west coast with his
wife in the hopes of finding gold in 1876. A chance stop outside Essex brought
John to a small river with faint blue traces in the mud along the bank. John
realized he was looking for the wrong metal; it was SILVER in these mountains!
Possibly even a vein as big as the Comstock Lode in Nevada.
Within months, he raised enough money to found the town of Providence, named
after his childhood home, and start the Bonanza King mine, which has been
operating since August 1, 1880. The mine was named after the Comstock Lode
discoverers James Flood, William O'Brien, James Fair and John Mackay.
John has no heirs, and his wife is the sole beneficiary of the estate, valued
at close to half a million dollars. She hopes to honor her late husband?s name
with another successful find in the mines. The Widow Merriwether is offering
her land for sale, at the low price of one $10 (ten dollars) per acre. The
only requirement is that homesteaders work in one of the many mines in the
area. She is certain the low cost of land will draw many eager men, anxious to
make their fortune.
Despite the passing of her beloved husband, who encouraged the residents of
Providence to good God-fearing ways and kept order without the need of a
deputy, Widow Merriwether trusts the residents of Providence to remain on
their best behavior, as John would have wanted.
Character Sketch
* After seeing the horrors of war, first between brother and brother, then
white against Indian, you left to join the more relaxed lifestyle of a
Pinkerton (detective agency). More rational, more secure.
* Although a highly qualified soldier, you were glad they didn't take you on
right away as a full detective. So you're eager to work your way up the ranks
of the Pinkerton Agency. So far, you've mostly engaged in paperwork, but
important paperwork. Without recording every fact, every detail, an
enterprising detective might miss or forget something. You've realized that
having a huge collection of information on criminals allows the Pinkertons to
track down outlaws days, weeks, months, even years after the public has
forgotten them, and bring them to justice.
* Now, you are on the return leg of a trip to southern Nevada. Along the way,
you have been spreading various wanted posters. You are bringing back word to
San Francisco of a bank robber that has been hitting a number of small towns
in this area. The exact details are in the sealed letter you are carrying.
* You're just hoping to get back to civilization. A warm bath, a nice shave,
and some clean air untainted by the stench of unwashed miners.?
